When you find your soul mate, your heart is at peace.
When you find your soul mate, there is confidence in the future.
When Josue told me he wanted to plan a surprise proposal in Boston for (his now fiance!) Myrlene, I sensed a peace of heart and confidence in a future together with her. Myrlene was totally caught by surprise when he asked her to spend the rest of eternity with him. Here is how it happened…
Josue and I communicated back and forth to figure out the best way for him to “pop the question”. He decided that he would surprise Myrlene with an Amara Photo portrait shoot at the Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain and then at some point during the shoot, would get down on one knee and ask. This was great because it allowed me to be right there to capture it without her even thinking twice about me being there. Josue shared that she loved to get letters from him, so we devised a plan where I would have them do an activity together where they each write a letter to each other where they express how they felt about the other. They would then take turns reading the other’s letter as they stood back to back. Josue would read Myrlene’s letter first and then Myrlene would read Josue’s, which ended in “Turn Around!” Upon turning around, she would find him down on one knee.
We found a quiet spot at the highest point in the park, and as with all masterful plans, there are always hiccups that occur which make the event even more memorable. You’ll see in the images that as Myrlene is reads Josue’s letter, he gets down on one knee in preparation for her to get to the end. However, she notices that he’s no longer back to back with her. She reaches back wondering where he is and he quickly has to stand back up (and is now stuck!) until she gets to the end of the letter.
When she got to the end, he quickly got back on his knee and the rest is history. My favorite image from the whole day is the black and white shot I took while Josue was getting back up after Myrlene said “YES!” He is looking up at her in excited vulnerability. I saw in his eyes a man who was giving his WHOLE heart to the one he loved. Not just his confidence and strengths, but everything: his fears, his weaknesses and hope and dreams.
Myrlene and Josue. Thank you so much for allowing us to document such a special moment in your lives.
